Living in the present moment

A lesson in mindfulness

Dementia teaches a profound lesson in mindfulness. It forces us, both the person and the caregiver, to live in the present moment. The past is fading, the future is unknowable, but the now is all there is. It is in the now that a smile occurs, that a hand is held, that a moment of shared peace or laughter is found.

To care for someone with dementia is to walk with them through a landscape of fog. You cannot make the fog clear, but you can be a steady, gentle, and loving presence beside them. You can hold their hand, guide them around the obstacles, and reassure them that they are safe, they are loved, and they are not alone.

In doing so, you are not just providing care. You are bearing witness to the enduring strength of the human spirit, even as it is slowly unravelled. It is one of the most challenging, heartbreaking, and ultimately, the most profound acts of love a human being can offer. It is the art of finding the person within the illness, and holding onto them, until the very end.
